ok so this shipped 4 days ago and i keep thinking about one detail: anthropic wrote the agent skills spec, but they were not in the room when everyone else shipped agent plugins 1.0.
aws, microsoft, openai, vercel, cursor. google joined the same day. anthropic? nowhere.
what it is: a folder with plugin.json, skills/ and mcp.json. one package, works in every client. you stop rebuilding your mcp server per tool.
sounds boring. it is. that's why it matters.
they deliberately left out permissions, sandboxing, trust — each platform keeps its own door. so whoever ships the client controls who gets in.
everyone is treating a packaging format like a land grab. because it kind of is.
and anthropic? their bet is depth over portability. subagents, hooks, lsp. fine, maybe they're right.
but it means builders now have two ecosystems to pick from, and most of us picked without really noticing.
the part that actually scares me: no trust model. install = trust. two weeks ago someone hid malicious instructions across mcp tool descriptions and results — 11 models tested, compliance jumped from 42% to 82%. that's your ssh keys.
i build agent infra (a2a, mcp, remote control). treating server output as data is the only thing that held up.
curious which side you'd pick — portable or platform deep?
